"Patching," the intimate debut album from Minnesota-born singer-songwriter runo plum, gracefully captures the contraction, expansion, and release of an intense period of emotional reconstruction through soft, radiant indie rock. A career-starting declaration born from a broken heart, "patching" is filled with rich sonic moments that fill emotional voids, turning an ending into an opening. The album's unreserved sincerity is not new for runo plum, who has been quietly writing and sharing her complex folk narratives from her bedroom for five years. During the pandemic, she gradually captivated a growing audience, independently releasing several singles and EPs, and developing her live performance skills alongside Searows, Angel Olsen, and Hovvdy. The album explores the double-edged sword of love and loss in a painful indie-rock freefall, with the unreserved frankness found on early Julia Jacklin or Big Thief records. "Patching" was recorded in two weeks in a cabin in rural Vermont. With Lutalo, a Minnesota-native but Vermont-based musician and producer, and Noa Francis, runo's collaborator, instrumentalist, and partner, the trio focused the recording on the warm, aged timbre of a century-old acoustic guitar and runo's enveloping voice. Across the album's twelve tracks, runo plum crafts melodic arcs that twist and collapse, creating songs that capture both the blurry highs and deep blue lows of the natural cycles that keep the world turning. Between delicacy and intensity, "patching" unveils a complete emotional palette, where every note seems to resonate intimately and authentically.
