RAY CHARLES
1957, ATLANTIC
Ray Charles' first studio album released in 1957, this eponymous LP is a true Best Of gathering fourteen songs – of which eleven were ranked in the Top 10 of the US charts between 1953 and its release year, the other three being B-sides. "Mess Around," the first single, would be covered in the 1960s by the Animals, in the seventies by Dr. John, and in 1980 by Squeeze, the band of Jools Holland. Producers Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler (who coined the term "rhythm & blues") are at the helm and allow the young Ray's enthusiasm to shine through, a powerful performer and songwriter of most of the songs, including the famous "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and "I Got A Woman," inspired by the Southern Tones' gospel "It Must Be Jesus." Listening to this series of hits helps to understand the nickname given to Ray Charles: The Genius.
