Wewantsounds is pleased to present the first official edition of a legendary concert from 1977 capturing Don Cherry, Collin Walcott, and Leon Thomas during their only documented performance. Recorded on March 5, 1977, at Pease Auditorium in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the concert is hypnotic and immersive, with the three musicians joined for part of the evening by the rest of the Oregon group. Circulating underground for years, the complete concert is now available in a remastered version, illustrated on the cover by Moki Cherry's "Mandala" (1975) and accompanied by new liner notes by Jason Weiss, under license from the Don Cherry Estate and producer James Quinlan, a central figure in the American jazz and world music scene. Don Cherry's influence has continued to grow over the years, as fans and new generations of listeners keep discovering the full extent of his musical vision. Sunrise captures his music during a particularly fertile period in the late 1970s, when the trumpeter blended a global spiritual vision with his philosophy of "Organic Music," drawing inspiration from Eastern and African traditions. Fluidly navigating between the trumpet, the West African doussn'gouni (a traditional hunter's harp from Mali), bamboo flutes, percussion, and vocals, he creates a unique soundscape. The concert takes place just a month after Don Cherry's participation in the recording of Collin Walcott's album Grazing Dreams for ECM. Don Cherry and Collin Walcott are joined by singer Leon Thomas, who brings his unique yodeling vocal style, and by the rest of the Oregon group (Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, and Glen Moore) for a performance that serves as a kind of preview of the CODONA group. The newly remastered audio truly gives the feeling of being in the audience, an essential document in the rich and ever-evolving musical journey of Don Cherry!
