Mingus - Oh Yeah - Γ©dition 180g - Vinyle
Charles Mingus

Free jazz breaks established rules to explore unpredictable sound territories. Born in the 1960s with Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Cecil Taylor, this approach favors spontaneity, raw energy, and pure emotion.
Pieces transform into true musical conversations, without a fixed structure.
An experience to live to feel the music in all its power, without barriers or a safety net.
This page brings together the free jazz vinyl records listed on Vinyles.com, each with offers from several partner stores. Free jazz, which emerged in the late 50s, set aside fixed chord changes and steady tempo in favor of collective improvisation. On record it is highly dynamic music, moving from quiet passages to dense ensemble roars, so a good pressing really matters. The collection features Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Mal Waldron and the Cecil Taylor Quintet, along with players like Max Roach who worked near the movement without being limited to it.
Ornette Coleman opened the door with "The Shape of Jazz to Come" (1959), then named the movement with "Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation" (1961), recorded by two quartets playing at once, both on Atlantic. Cecil Taylor made "Unit Structures" (1966) for Blue Note, where Eric Dolphy also cut "Out to Lunch!" (1964). Albert Ayler recorded "Spiritual Unity" for ESP-Disk.
At Impulse!, John Coltrane moved into free territory with "Ascension", and Pharoah Sanders released "Karma" (1969). Meanwhile, Sun Ra and his Arkestra built a world of their own, largely issued on their Saturn label. In Europe, the French label BYG Actuel documented the free scene in Paris around 1969. Those Paris sessions drew many American musicians then in the city.
Original 60s pressings on Blue Note, Impulse! or ESP-Disk are expensive and vary widely in condition. For listening, several reissue lines have a strong reputation: Blue Note Tone Poet and the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, recent Impulse! and Verve reissues, and ESP-Disk's own reissues. Sun Ra's huge catalog is also reissued regularly. Comparing offers side by side is the easiest way to see which edition fits your budget.
Free jazz sits within the site's Jazz/Blues section. Many of its players came up through hard bop before breaking away from it, which makes that style a logical way to hear where free jazz came from. Charles Mingus, Mal Waldron and Max Roach bridge both worlds. The jazz new releases page tracks reissues and current musicians who carry that improvising freedom forward.
