Description

A burning chapter from the beginnings of Zu is reborn: Igneo, released in 2002, is available again. Recorded and mixed by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, the album captures the band in a raw and explosive form, between avant-jazz and experimental rock. The trio's first studio album lays the foundations of their unique sound identity. The record is part of an approach of experimentation and exploration, with a sound more open than their later works. Improvisation and real-time interaction play a central role. Baritone saxophone, electric bass, and drums weave a language blending free jazz, noise, and post-hardcore. The balance between raw energy and expressive freedom is constant, each instrument oscillating between structure and deconstruction. The tracks evolve freely, without conventional forms, with sudden changes and a permanent instability. The title Igneo reflects this incandescent music well, in continuous movement, close to eruption. Despite a minimalist and rough production, the album is essential for understanding the evolution of the band and already reveals a strong and personal identity.
