Bach - Busoni - Beethoven

Description

For this album, Yuko Shiokawa and Andras Schiff shine in a program of sonatas for violin and piano that is as wonderful as it is relevant. This program begins with Bach's Sonata No. 3 in E Major, concludes with Beethoven's Sonata No. 10 in G Major, and finds its balance with Busoni's Sonata No. 3 in E Minor. No 20th-century composer has invested as much in Bach's music as Ferruccio Busoni, and his second Sonata, published in 1901, owes as much to Bach as to Beethoven. Its very form references Beethoven's late sonatas, and its final movement was conceived as a variation of Bach's choral theme "Wie wohl ist mir." As in their previous and highly acclaimed duo recording for ECM (featuring Schubert's Fantasies), Shiokawa and Schiff perform the music with absolute authority and deep vision. Their Bach-Busoni-Beethoven program was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano in December 2016 and is produced by Manfred Eicher.
