From the first track (“The Plum Blossom”), we enter a jazz dominated by a versatile piano played by Barry Harris, and Yusef accompanies him with an exotic instrument, the xun, a globular clay flute created in China 7,000 years ago. This composition inspired Cat Stevens for his song “I Love My Dog” released in 1966, five years after the recording of Eastern Sounds. Lateef's hard bop takes on a Middle Eastern hue in the nine tracks of this record, played by a quartet of heavyweights with the formidable rhythm section Ernie Farrow/Lex Humphries. Two covers are included here, taken from prestigious Original Soundtracks: the “Love Theme” from Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick composed by Alex North and that of The Robe by Alfred Newman. A luxurious and warm instrumental album, capable of appealing beyond the strict jazz audience.
