« After 7 albums indirectly devoted to my maternal cultural heritage (Jewish origins from Transylvania), I conceived « Songs for the Old Man » as a re-interpretation of my father's American exile, after he left for the United States in the 1950s.
A collection of clarinet folk songs that I "sing" for my father, to my father, but also to all those who spend their lives on the road, the nomads, the hobos, the displaced, the refugees, with the desire to blend my diverse influences from Eastern Europe with « americana ».
I decided to entrust the arrangements and the musical co-direction of this new lineup to five as well as the artistic direction of the album to Aurélien Naffrichoux, whose americana is truly his culture and passion.
He is the one who transformed my original compositions into real songs and who, together with engineer Ludovic Palabaud, chose this totally acoustic and « roots » sound with live-only takes made possible also by the incredible quality of the musicians present on the album: Sylvain Daniel on bass with whom I have worked for over 10 years (bass player of the Wonder Rabbis among others), Guillaume Magne on folk guitar, a brilliant instinctive, poetic musician, and Mathieu Penot on drums, with an absolutely perfect sensitivity for the project.
The album was largely made in Denis Barthe's studio, drummer of Noir Désir, where I had already mixed two previous albums: a magnificent place, a true Landes ranch lost deep in the forest, surrounded by horses and wild animals, pine trees as far as the eye can see and 4x4 pick-ups. America in France, perfection for making this album!
Add to that the drawings by Fanny Ducassé, a great artist who has written and illustrated several children's books, whom I asked to create the visual universe of the album: here she created one of my most beautiful covers, an interior frieze nearly a meter long that could be called like one of the songs on the album « on the endless road », of a breathtakingly hallucinatory dreamlike beauty» Yom
