Playing on a baroque cello (fitted with gut strings and lacking an endpin, forcing the performer to hold it between their legs), Yo-Yo Ma delivers the warm, accessible classical music that has made him famous. Accompanied by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Ton Koopman, Ma offers a completely original interpretation of some of Bach's most famous baroque works, as well as lesser-known pieces by the Italian composer Luigi Boccherini. The sound of the baroque cello gives each piece a warmer, more intimate atmosphere. The gut string composition provides a less dry timbre than that of usual wound strings, and the absence of an endpin prevents any sound from traveling through the floor: the sound comes directly from the instrument's soundbox.
