From "Bo Mambo" to "Carnavilito Boliviano," Yma Sumac's fifth album showcases all her vocal abilities. Just before turning twenty, this Peruvian soprano, a descendant of the last Inca emperor, emigrated to Los Angeles where she made her voice, name, and extravagant personality known. In 1954, Mambo! was released, mostly written by her husband, Moises Vicanco, and arranged by Billy May. It confirms her fervent operatic acting style, put to the service of exotic melodies. Borrowing from both swing and mambo vocabulary, the orchestrations are remarkable, and elevated by Yma's explosive character.
