Description

An ascent to Cuba for Laborie Jazz. Never before had he taken the time to listen, to spot, to feel the young Cuban Scene and particularly the current creation and writing circulating on the island. Yissy García, both a percussionist and composer, is one of the most respected artists among the new generation of Cuban musicians, particularly gifted. Considered the most important female percussionist on the island and one of its most dynamic and innovative performers, she demonstrates the art of combining traps and percussion, drawing inspiration from both Cuban folk and popular music as well as contemporary jazz and funk styles.
Yissy García has performed in numerous venues, both nationally and internationally (United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, France, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador) - and with famous artists such as Dave Matthews, Esperanza Spalding, Josua Bell, Omara Portuondo, and Carlos Varela. She has been described by Tom Tom magazine (a quarterly magazine on female percussionists based in New York) as Cuba's answer to Terri Lyne Carrington, and by Jazz Times as “a rising star.” Yissy García leads “her” Bandancha, an extremely innovative quintet that combines Latin Jazz, funk, hip hop, and various styles of Cuban music.
