Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999)Centenary of his birthThe Complete American Victor RecordingsBetween his birth in New York on April 22, 2016, and his passing in Berlin on March 12, 1999, Yehudi Menuhin, son of a modest Russian immigrant, transformed from a child prodigy on the violin (he made his concert debut at the age of 7!) into one of the major figures of culture in the 20th century.He remains in history as one of the greatest violinists of his time, but also as a prominent ambassador of peace, a passionate advocate for rapprochement between Israel and Palestine, a defender of civil rights, a great man of culture, and was knighted by the Queen of England in 1993.He was particularly attached to France, where he lived for several years starting in 1930. He was enlisted in the American army during World War II to boost the morale of the Allied troops.Shortly after, he began a career as a conductor and established in Paris in 1980 the foundation that bears his name, which would count among its laureates Nigel Kennedy, Laurent Korcia, Jean-Marc Luisada, among others. He was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1986.On the occasion of the Centenary of his birth, this box set of 6 CDs is released, which includes many musical treasures and rarities such as these 2 unpublished recordings from 1949 of Beethoven's "Spring" and "Kreutzer" Sonatas, where he is accompanied by his sister Hephzibah on piano.
