Yaron Herman reinvents himself with ALMA, a solo piano album centered on improvisation sessions, in a desire to return to the very essence of freedom, play, exploration, and imagination. “In this album, I wanted to get to the essentials. Outside of any predefined concept, plan, or idea of particular themes. Just, to sit at the piano, close my eyes, and let myself be guided by the music. To embark on an inner journey.” ALMA opens a whole new door for pianist YARON HERMAN. After ten albums, here he is throwing himself into the void and, for the first time, offering us an entirely improvised body of work, both a stunning snapshot of the moment and a rich mirror of his past. His learning, under the guidance of OPHER BRAYER, encourages him in a holistic vision where the study of music is part of a whole that integrates philosophy, psychology, and mathematics. The piano is thus at the center of a broader reflection, a travel companion to attempt to decipher the mysteries of the World. It is sometimes forgotten that at the dawn of music, until the end of the 16th century, "total" improvisation was at the heart of practice. Later, from Bach to Chopin, from Beethoven to Messiaen, all crafted melodies and invented harmonies in the moment, which sometimes became the matrix of their masterpieces. This is the path that YARON HERMAN follows when he crosses the studio door to record ALMA. Without any preconceived scenario, he will go to the end of a form of letting go, being entirely attuned to what the music has to say to him, opening doors to spaces that are still unknown to him. Improvising is composing in real time. When one writes music, the first gesture - what is sometimes called "Inspiration" - is improvised. Composing is in a certain way, improvising armed with a pencil and an eraser. ALMA thus proceeds from a flow that transcends Music itself, and finds its source in the imperative desire to "always leave the door ajar to invite what must happen to occur." Building concise and skillfully architected pieces in this way, inventing melodies that develop following a logic that is defined in real time is a process of infinite complexity. An extraordinary capacity for invention and concentration is then required, a sense of the present coupled with an (un)awareness of the future without which no development is possible. ALMA is a rare invitation, an inner dance that takes us very far; it is a sensory journey to which we are invited and a deep emotion that never lets us go. Born in Tel Aviv in 1981, YARON HERMAN began piano at the age of 16, taught by OPHER BRAYER, whose method, based on a mathematical and philosophical approach, nourishes his approach to improvisation. In 2007, he was elected Jazz ADAMI talent. He won a Victoire de la Musique in 2008 in the category of best hope. Yaron Herman has played in the world's greatest venues and festivals. He gives TED talks on the subject of math and music through the theme of the creative process and published a book developing these topics in October 2020.
