The "gothics" - even before the word goth took shape - believed in the punk DIY ethic, which held that anyone could play an instrument. Gray clouds began to form, and in the unlikely city of Hamburg, a band of five bold and haunting women formed Xmal Deutschland. Like any true punk, the members of Xmal Deutschland, Caro May, Rita Simon, Manuela Rickers, Fiona Sangster, and Anja Huwe, started the group with no prior musical experience. Early Singles (1981-1982) is a collection of 45s, singles, live versions, and bonus tracks, as well as a map of the foundations of the band Xmal Deutschland, just seconds before its takeoff. The independence of punk from the rigid grip of tradition allowed the band to find comfort in anti-establishment art and music, far from the conventions of the past. With their mohawks and thick kohl-rimmed eyes, Xmal Deutschland's music retained both agitation and delicacy, transcending the boundaries of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" movement (just like their colleagues and friends DAF and Einstürzende Neubauten). For fans of Siouxsie & the Banshees, Skeletal Family, 13th Chime, Play Dead, Corpus Delicti, Sisters of Mercy, Clan of Xymox, Christian Death, The Danse Society, Virgin Prunes.
