The virtuosic music of a rare composer: Edward MacDowell! Edward MacDowell is the most admired American composer of his generation and the first to gain a true international reputation. Born in New York, he quickly left to study in Germany. He studied piano and composition in Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, then Frankfurt. Returning to Boston in 1880 and then to New York, he became the first music professor at Columbia University. The various Romantic influences that shaped the style of the first concerto include the music of Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Grieg, while the technical demands placed on the soloist reveal MacDowell’s prowess as a pianist. A major work in the USA, particularly well performed here by the virtuoso pianist Xiayin Wang.
