Piano concerto n°1

Description

Each recording of the Russian pianist Grigori Sokolov, whether recent or dating back a few years, is a true event. Russian like them, he is generally and justifiably elevated to the rank of Emil Gilels or Sviatoslav Richter, of whom he embodies the continuity. Born in 1950 in Leningrad, his stage presence began at the age of five! His early gifts are unanimously recognized, and he is immediately entrusted to the greatest masters of the Conservatory of his hometown. In 1966, he won (at 16 years old!) the First Prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition, chaired by Emil Gilels. He then finds himself propelled onto the international stage, and the characteristics of his playing are unanimously acclaimed: depth of discourse, virtuosity of a robustness that withstands all tests, a personal and highly sought-after interpretation style, and an immense repertoire. Everywhere he now performs to full houses, like in Paris, which discovers him late. We hear him here in the "king" of Concertos, the first by Chopin, which he recorded in 1977 in Munich, under the direction of the Polish conductor Witold Rowicki. Recorded in Munich in 1977 - remastered tapes.
