«Johnny Cash: Forever Words» is an album of poems and unpublished writings by Johnny Cash, set to music by artists such as Chris Cornell, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson, Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves, John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello, The Jayhawks, and many others.
Mainly recorded at Cash Cabin Studio, in Hendersonville, Tennessee, «Johnny Cash: Forever Words» is the musical counterpart to the best-selling book «Forever Words», which also brings together unpublished writings by Johnny Cash. The book was published in late 2016 by Canongate, and a paperback version has also been available since February 2018. Many of the songs on the album were directly inspired by the texts from this collection, while others were composed from different sources.
The tone of the album is set right from the start, with a first track titled «Forever/I Still Miss Someone», featuring Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson, long-time friends of the artist, performing the last poem written by Johnny Cash. The album continues with other close associates of the artist: Ruston Kelly and Kacey Musgraves, who perform the very personal «To June This Morning», a letter written by Johnny Cash to his wife, June Carter Cash.
«Johnny Cash: Forever Words» is also one of the last musical projects that Chris Cornell participated in. Twenty-one years after Johnny Cash's cover of «Rusty Cage» (Soundgarden) for his Grammy Award-winning album «Unchained», Chris Cornell carries on the legacy left by Johnny Cash with the song «You Never Knew My Mind», one of the last solo recordings by the Soundgarden singer.
