When William Steinberg was appointed music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1969, he reached the pinnacle of his career. In 2004, critic Richard Freed wrote about Schubert's Ninth Symphony and Bruckner's Sixth Symphony: "They rank among the finest entries in his discography and among the best recordings of these works." Mendelssohn's orchestration of the Scherzo from his Octet and the Scherzo fantastique and Scherzo à la russe by Stravinsky, coupled on CD 3 with formidable virtuoso interpretations of orchestral masterpieces by Dukas, Richard Strauss, and Saint-Saëns, remained unreleased — until now. This overview of the RCA Boston Symphony recordings from the Steinberg era is completed by 1970 recordings of Dvořák's "New World" Symphony and the Carnival Overture by Arthur Fiedler, a former BSO violinist and longtime conductor of the Boston Pops.
