Django Celebration: sharing tradition, inheriting virtuosity.
A meeting between two essential figures of gypsy jazz: Tchavolo Schmitt, who embodies this music in himself, and Fanou Torracinta, one of the most brilliant representatives of the new generation of gypsy jazz.
The Django Celebration collection celebrates the legacy of Django Reinhardt through a series of intergenerational encounters.
This meeting between Tchavolo Schmitt and Fanou Torracinta is no coincidence. As a young guitarist, Fanou shared a summer tour with Tchavolo, which was decisive for the rest of his career. Thirteen years later, Fanou has built up solid stage experience enriched with albums under his own name. Tchavolo, for his part, with his characteristic style combining rhythmic power and harmonic audacity, remains a reference in the world of gypsy jazz.
Both men share a strong taste for waltz and beautiful melodies, in keeping with their roots (Romani culture for one, Corsican tradition for the other). The two artists also present themselves as true explorers of the purely acoustic resources of the instrument (attacks, timbres, resonances...). This dimension appears particularly in the solo guitar introductions or the cadenzas of one or the other (Danse Norvégienne, Love Me Tender...), illustrating this quest for sound, which Django Reinhardt himself initiated, cultivating in passing the art of the prelude and that of the coda.
The program includes: Django classics (Daphné, Stompin' at Decca...), reinterpretations of standards (Confessin', I can't give you anything but love, Stardust...), as well as two ballads, one from the classical repertoire (Grieg's Norwegian Dance) and the other from great American song (Elvis Presley's Love Me Tender). A real gem!
Tchavolo and Fanou, like their master, favor an art of exchange and complicity, fully illustrated by their version of Daphné or I can't give you anything but love.
