Description

William Bolcom was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1988 for his Twelve New Studies for Piano. A soloist and accompanist himself, his music has always revolved around his instrument. This collection, most of which features first recordings, reveals works that represent the musical confrontations of the 20th century, between the avant-garde influences of Boulez and Messiaen and an unconditional love for Schumann. As for the later works, they refer to the revival of ragtime. The composer draws inspiration from his friends and colleagues at every stage of his six-decade career. Elegantly performed by his friends, Bolcom considers this vast program a "spring cleaning," in the manner of Charles Ives.
