Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) was recognized worldwide as an exceptional authority in classical and romantic piano music. This admiration is particularly well-deserved, as evidenced by his interpretations of Beethoven's concertos and the Diabelli Variations, which are still considered "revolutionary" by critics. At 16, he gave his first concert in London, and in 1905, he won the prestigious Anton Rubinstein prize in Paris, ahead of Klemperer and Bartók. His first concert in the United States in 1912 was followed by tours in South America and Australia. This CD collection also includes recordings from the 1920s for player pianos, which were appreciated at the time for their superior sound quality.
