Originally from Blacksburg, Virginia, composer Jack Tatum makes music under the name Wild Nothing. A bit like a mix of Cocteau Twins and Atlas Sound, the songs from his debut album, Gemini, are graceful and airy but are powerfully interconnected. "Chinatown" ebbs and flows with light vocals and bold guitars, while tracks like the catchiest "Summer Holiday" and "Our Composition Book" evoke Johnny Marr and the Smiths with their jangly melancholy. On "Confirmation," Tatum uses his falsetto voice, whose imperfections add to its charm, weaving between hazy keyboards and shimmering guitar and bass lines.
