A Strained Ocean

Description

A Strained Ocean is Wheobe's debut studio album. The quartet has accustomed us to a raw sound and ever-shifting aesthetics, between violent noise and jazz detours. Here, however, Wheobe offers us a more intimate album, without straying from the labyrinthine compositional style that characterizes the group. While in form, the project seems to drift along many artistic currents, between progressive rock, post-rock, ambient, and jazz, A Strained Ocean is carried by a single concept, a metaphor depicted throughout these eleven adventurous tracks. Wheobe observes the human relational fabric, comparable to the surface of a strained ocean: each individual, each drop, is moved by the motion of its neighbors in an ocean under tension, within which it seems impossible to find one's place. Throughout the album's three parts, we observe the drifting, resistance, and reflection of humans constrained by the swell, struggling to make a refuge out of these eddies. Each instrumental surge shuffles the deck and sends certainties flying, each melody tries to build a rampart, a cocoon against the waves. These eleven tracks, conceived as a thought experiment, then pose the question: are we subject to the upheavals of the human tide, or is it possible to imagine a calm sea, on which to navigate in peace?
