Pinkerton is the second album by the American rock band Weezer. It was released on September 24, 1996, on the Geffen label. Singer and guitarist Rivers Cuomo wrote all the songs on the album. Pinkerton is named after the character B.F. Pinkerton from Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly, which premiered in 1904. This Weezer record is more or less a concept album, loosely based on Puccini's opera. Word of mouth and the online fan community greatly contributed to making Pinkerton a cult album, which was rehabilitated towards the end of the decade and into the early 2000s. In a special issue celebrating its 20th anniversary, Spin magazine ranked Pinkerton 61st in its list of the best albums released between 1985 and 2005. Pitchfork Media placed it at number 53 on its list of the best albums of the 1990s. In 2004, Rolling Stone gave Pinkerton a new review, awarding it five stars out of five.
