Wang Weiping belongs to the generation of pipa performers who have brilliantly succeeded the historical masters, matching them in both virtuosity and musicality: traditional works and compositions under the emblematic figure of Princess Wang Zhaojun. The pipa, an instrument with the most developed repertoire and technique, has long been in the hands of professionals, holding a prominent place both in conservatories and at concerts. The new generation following the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) has brilliantly succeeded the historical masters, Li Tingsong (Suzhou 1906-1976), Lin Shicheng (born in 1922 in Shanghai), and even Liu Dehai (born in 1937 in Hebei), matching them in both virtuosity and musicality. Wang Weiping is today one of the brilliant and profound examples of this. It is also worth noting that Chinese culture is one of the few in the world to give female instrumentalists their rightful place, particularly in the pipa. A specialist performer of the millennia-old repertoire of Dunhuang scores, in the transcription of Ye Dong, she has played them in both Hong Kong and Macao as well as in Japan. She continues an international career either as a soloist or as part of the "Fleur de Prunus" ensemble and collaborates with contemporary Chinese composers (she will perform at the Présences contemporary music festival at Radio France in February 2022).
