“It is life that beats, come and go/There in our stateless veins/Where hidden in our chests/There is the air of new refrains” In the heart of the new album and the track “Liberti,” a reaffirmed secular profession of faith: Erwan Naour, the creator of the legendary Hurlements d’Léo, opens the windows, looks at and welcomes the world with a fresh eye, a pen more inspired than ever. A banjo, crafted textures for a hope and a voice that seize you by the heart and body: “Liberti,” named after those slaves of ancient Rome freed by their masters, whose children are then called to become citizens. With the Wallace project, this second album and, all things considered, the artist asserts himself and frees himself too, radiant and unifying.
The production of these ten tracks is a delight of harmonies, cascading swerves, musical caresses. From the very first (“Quand le soleil se lève”), the tone is set: the new Wallace speaks about himself but above all looks at others, under the rays of fraternity. From electro-sensitive swirls (the moving “Je t’aime tant”) to Catalan rumba (“Dès demain” where mentor Mano Solo seems to come back to life), from rock gallops (“Jump 31”, “Droit devant”) to the ballad (“Ma fille est si jolie”), each song is a journey with multiple twists and turns. Eclectic? Absolutely, aren’t we all?
“Petite fille de septembre” ideally rounds off this album of renewal filled with energy and hope, bubbling with worlds and yet remarkably coherent, in terms of tempo, in terms of heartbeat. One can love Pixies and Clash, Brel and Dominique A, Satie and Chopin, can’t one?
