In 1976, seven musicians from Cape Verde called Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they recorded a formidable album of coladeira songs inspired by the music of their native island São Nicolau. The recording of the album took only a few days, which may explain the astonishing sense of urgency in each track. Electric guitar lines filled with high notes weave along the percussion and cavaquinho rhythms inspired by the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cape Verdean emigrants. Subtle keyboards slip into the background, and the vocals, performed by Joana Do Rosario and Tô-Zé, alternately support the music and give it a certain momentum. The resulting album is both sensitive and extremely well-executed, bringing together some of the best musicians from Cape Verde at the time around a common goal. This should have been the beginning of something extraordinary; however, financial constraints forced the musicians to return to their jobs, and Voz Di Sanicolau disappeared as quickly as they had appeared, leaving their only album, Fundo de Marê Palinha, as the sole evidence of their existence. Forty-four years later, the album sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded. It is unknown whether the Dutch sound engineer Frans Rolland, who oversaw the recordings, knew he was contributing to writing history, but during these sessions, Joana Do Rosario, whose majestic voice was pivotal to the sound of Voz Di Sanicolau, became the first woman from Cape Verde to appear on a record. Limited edition in a gatefold sleeve, pressed on 180g audiophile vinyl.
