Description

Ligams (which means “links” in Occitan) is the fifth album by Vox Bigerri. It brings together fourteen polyphonic songs from the Pyrenees, among the most sung songs in Bigorre and Béarn during evening gatherings, village festivals, or “canteras,” those festive evenings where people come together to sing. This record is also a way of celebrating the ensemble’s ten years and highlighting this polyphonic know-how that is passed down in the Pyrenees. Once again, it is the sound that takes center stage here. Drawing on many experiences across various musical aesthetics, Corsican and Sardinian polyphonies, early music or contemporary music, each carrying specific vocal placements, Vox Bigerri here makes heard, in all its fullness, that characteristic sound of the Pyrenees in the repertoire par excellence of this practice: table songs. These are songs, often without a pulse, performed in moments of conviviality, and which have a social bonding function: we sing together in order to be together. Some have been sung for centuries, and the musical system that drives them has been refined to its purest form by successive generations of singers. The result is a full, vibrant sound, where the voices merge.
