For Marie-Claude Lambert-Philéas, music is a family affair; the Maloya rhythms of her late father — the famous Gramoun Lélé — run through her heart and her veins. Surrounded by her husband and children, she created her Traditional Maloya group, where music is a way of life, simply inseparable from who they are. Votia plays maloya in its most powerful and fastest expression, that of the east of the island. She composes and sings in Malagasy and Creole, a powerful Maloya marked by polyphony and percussion, influenced by Indian and African music that accompanied her over the years and through tours with her father. Her aim is transmission and the duty of remembrance toward the younger generations. Her maloya is a cry and a blues, but also and above all a celebration of the joy of being, of singing, playing and dancing, and of sharing, with authentic generosity.
