Volturian's sophomore effort is a truly inspired and elegant take on the modern "female-fronted" metal template. A blend of the gothic, melancholic feel of the outstanding debut album "Crimson" (2020) with an even more refined pop vein and some additional subtle electronic layers. Every song on "Red Dragon" displays a very contemporary sound, intriguing arrangements, and a charming sonic dynamic, not to mention Federico Mondelli's always masterful songwriting. Carried by the warm performance of frontwoman Federica Lanna, inspired by the lyrics and aesthetics of Thomas Harris' "Red Dragon" (the novel that gave birth to the myth of Hannibal Lecter) and the graphic novels of Alan Moore and Frank Miller. Volturian's new record will wrap listeners in a warm blanket to open their eyes to a throbbing scarlet light.
