The cult Canadian thrash metal band Voivod formed in 1982 in Jonquière. The lineup consisted of Denis 'Piggy' d'Amour on guitar, Jean-Yves 'Blacky' Thériault on bass, Denis 'Snake' Bélanger on vocals, and Michel 'Away' Langevin on drums. Away, who is also the band's writer and illustrator, created the character of Voivod, a vampire-android knight from the post-nuclear era that would evolve over the course of the albums.
Between 1986 and 1988, the band released 3 albums on the Noise Records label. RRRÖÖÖAAARRR, with its destructive speed metal, came out in 1986. It was followed the same year by the more experimental Killing Technology, where the band demonstrated great mastery of their instruments and built a solid reputation. Finally, Dimension Hatross, with its progressive tendencies and which used the sampling technique for the first time—later adopted by countless prog metal bands—was released in 1988.
With a different lineup, Voivod continues to record and tour today, driven by 'Away. He recalls the Noise years in these terms: "At the time, we were part of an exciting thrash metal scene that was exploding. When we started our adventure with Noise, we were all in our twenties, but thanks to the doors they opened for us, we still play music today. And for that alone, we are grateful to them."
