The cult Canadian thrash metal band Voivod formed in 1982 in Jonquière. It was then made up of Denis 'Piggy' d'Amour on guitar, Jean-Yves 'Blacky' Thériault on bass, Denis 'Snake' Bélanger on vocals, and Michel 'Away' Langevin on drums. It is Away, who is also the band’s writer and illustrator, who invents the character of Voivod, an android vampire knight from the post-nuclear era who will evolve over the albums. Between 1986 and 1988, the band released 3 albums for the Noise Records label. RRRÖÖÖAAARRR, with its destructive speed metal, came out in 1986. It was followed the same year by the more experimental Killing Technology, where the band demonstrates great mastery of its instruments and builds a fine reputation. Finally, Dimension Hatross, with progressive tendencies and which used for the first time the sampling technique later taken up by a multitude of prog metal bands, was released in 1988. With a different line-up, Voivod continues today to record and tour under the impetus of 'Away. He evokes the Noise years in these terms: “At the time we were part of an exciting thrash metal scene that was exploding. When we started our adventure with Noise, we were all in our twenties, but thanks to the doors they opened for us, we are still playing music today. And for that alone, we are grateful to them.”
