Tribute to Scriabin for the 100th anniversary of his death
The year 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Scriabin’s death (1872-1915), a visionary composer whose piano works are perfectly interpreted by his compatriot Vladimir Ashkenazy. Scriabin’s distinctive style is characterized in particular by his marked taste for short forms, a condensation and brevity that are evident in almost all of his piano music. The forty pieces on the album, which span Scriabin’s entire career, last on average less than two minutes. Through this recording, Vladimir Ashkenazy offers us an extraordinary musical journey, moving from Romanticism to the mystical modernism of the later works. This selection also includes a composition by Scriabin’s son, Yulian, written when he was ten years old in 1918. He tragically died the following year, cutting short what was proving to be a promising career.
