Le voyage dans la lune

Jules Verne inspires the booklet of this fairy-tale opera by Offenbach created in 1875. The enthusiasm of Parisians for this genre can be explained by impressive stage effects: for Le Voyage dans la Lune, two ballets and about twenty sets take the audience on a journey between Earth and its satellite, successively recreating the Paris Observatory, an active blast furnace, or the interior of an erupting volcano. The work is filled with wacky characters and imaginary places: lunar landscapes, glass palaces, mother-of-pearl galleries… They even borrowed a dromedary and an ostrich from the Jardin d’acclimatation! To accompany this scenic display, Offenbach piles up hit pieces, performed with humor and energy by a team of enthusiastic soloists. The Montpellier Occitanie National Choir and Orchestra is under the subtle and precise baton of Pierre Dumoussaud.
