Miraculously, the magnificent grand organ of Notre-Dame de Paris survived the catastrophic fire at the cathedral in April 2019. Its 8,000 pipes were affected by water from the fire hoses and by lead dust, but, fully cleaned and restored, it was put back into service for the cathedral’s historic reopening in December 2024. This new recording by Vincent Dubois, one of the four titular organists of Notre-Dame, showcases the technical, musical and expressive palette of this monumental instrument built by the great Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The program also pays tribute to the organ’s legacy: the former titular organists of Notre-Dame are represented by pieces by Louis Vierne, Pierre Cochereau and Claude Balbastre, as well as by an arrangement (of Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Flight of the Bumblebee) by Léonce de Saint-Martin; Dubois himself has transcribed three movements from Ravel’s suite Le Tombeau de Couperin, as well as works by César Franck and Charles Widor. The program concludes with the sublime JS Bach, who presents a work that defines the organ as an instrument, the imperious Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
