Description

Reissue of the first album by the Lyon-based band, originally released in 2014. Apiafo is a true afro-funk record through and through. From heavy funk (No Problem) to afrobeat (Wrong Road), from blues (Ata Calling) to quasi-Ethiopian voodoo vibes (Dangerous Bees), these 45 minutes will fly by in a flash. The record is clearly old-school, in the tradition of the regular revivals of 1970s African music. Togolese singer Peter Solo, originally from Aného-Glidji, draws on the spiritual and cultural heritage of voodoo to found Vaudou Game. By exploring the two traditional musical scales of Togolese and Beninese voodoo chants, usually unaccompanied by harmonic instruments, he composes an album blending raw funk with more bluesy and sacred atmospheres. Recorded with vintage instruments, the project asserts an authentic yet resolutely contemporary approach, celebrating and renewing voodoo musical culture.
