Remastered reissue: Van Halen’s third album achieves the feat of staying firmly in line with its predecessors (we’re here to have fun, and hard rock is the ideal vehicle to take us to heights of pleasure), while offering an undeniable evolution in inspiration, and therefore in the music (we are also rational beings). It is also the album of firsts: first use of sophisticated keyboards (it is even an electric piano, Eddie Van Halen’s pet obsession, that opens the proceedings, which is quite something). First set made up solely of the band’s own compositions (with “And The Craddle Will Rock.”, the only single released to the market, “Romeo Delight”, which in private can also be considered a sex toy, or “Everybody Wants Some !!”, an absolute band standard). First appearance (and the last!), finally, of the fair sex in a Van Halen song, with Nicolette Larson’s participation in the backing vocals of “Could This Be Magic ?”. The album’s tension is palpable (Eddie wanting to be recognized as a great musician and composer, singer David Lee Roth being there just to have fun), and that is undoubtedly what makes its strength, and its glue, in a curious project where the roughest music ever recorded by the band coexists with a few bars of country music, or totally acoustic atmospheres. Women And Children First reached sixth place in the pop music charts, while the single “And The Craddle Will Rock.” had to settle for 55th place in its category.
