Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992): Maria de Buenos Aires, a tango opera with a libretto by Horacio Ferrer, was premiered at the Sala Planeta in Buenos Aires in May 1968. Who is María? Horacio Ferrer, the librettist of this unconventional 'operita', said she was a representation of Buenos Aires, embodying the spirit of tango itself. María de Buenos Aires exists outside of any known genre. According to Ferrer, his highly poetic libretto was written "not to be understood, but to create emotion and atmosphere." Piazzolla's music also offers a rich blend of classical forms and Argentine traditions - the milonga, the tango, and the spoken word of the traditional payada. In this first major recording since the 1980s, the Mr. McFall Chamber welcomes long-time collaborators such as Valentina Montoya Martínez and Nicholas Mulroy, narrator Juanjo Lopez Vidal, and internationally renowned tango musicians Victor Villena and Cyril Garac. Known for its eclectic programming approach, which encompasses progressive rock, cartoon classics, folk and jazz, early music, and contemporary music, the Mr. McFall Chamber has built a reputation for its tango interpretations in recent years. This arrangement of Piazzolla's score, specially designed for the group by its founder, Robert McFall, represents the culmination of more than ten years of dedicated work.
