In a world premiere on record, Symphony No. 4 by James MacMillan and the Violin Concerto, performed by the excellent Vadim Repin. James MacMillan is a Scottish composer born in 1959 and already widely performed in Great Britain, whose music is often inspired by traditional Scottish and Celtic music. This Onyx recording offers us the first recordings on disc of two important works. The Violin Concerto was dedicated to Vadim Repin, and it is the virtuoso, winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium, who performs it here. The Symphony No. 4 presented on this disc is dedicated to the conductor Donald Runnicles, and it is therefore he, at the head of the BBC Scottish Symphony, who gives this pioneering version, in world premiere.
