Uto Ughi plays Beethoven violin sonatas

In anticipation of the 250th anniversary of his birth, Sony Classical presents four major reissues dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven at a very low price. Among the treasures of these new CD box sets, one can find complete symphonies, string quartets, and violin sonatas performed by the Guarneri Quartet, Arturo Toscanini, Uto Ughi, as well as the two ensembles Archibudelli and Mozzafiato. The first master box set brings together 9 symphonies from the NBC Orchestra under the legendary Arturo Toscanini, carefully selected and captured by RCA's microphones. These performances have never sounded better than in Sony Classical's latest remastering. The second box set offers the complete cycle of Beethoven's 16 string quartets performed by the renowned Guarneri Quartet, one of the most distinguished and oldest chamber music ensembles in the United States. The third box set features 10 violin sonatas by Beethoven performed by soloist Uto Ughi, accompanied by "one of the best chamber pianists of our time" (Alfred Brendel): Lamar Crowson. Two exceptional period instrument ensembles are also highlighted in the fourth box set: the Archibudelli ensemble and the wind ensemble Mozzafiato. Among many works, the first interprets, for example, Beethoven's Three Trios, Op.9, and manages to convey their "own taste for music" (Gramophone). Mozzafiato, conducted by Charles Neidich, presents, among others, the Octet Op.103, the Sextet Op.71, and the March, WoO 29.
