"We simply opened our minds and let it all out." Voice & Strings & Timpani is the latest from guitarist Stephan Meidell and drummer Øyvind Hegg-Lunde, two of the most important figures in the new generation of Norwegian music, pillars of the Hubro label and Bergen's vibrant experimental music scene. They both play in violinist Erlend Apneseth's renowned band; Meidell is part of the trio Cakewalk and has his own solo projects, including the Metrics Ensemble and Trigger; Hegg-Lunde plays with Building Instrument, Electric Eye, and Jose Gonzales's "indie" band Junip. They have been working together for fifteen years and have released four albums, first as the duo The Sweetest Thrill, then as Strings & Timpani. Both collaborate with other artists in various art forms. It is important to discuss this earlier period in detail, because after several listens, it is clear that this album represents the mythical moment when a band suddenly breaks through and creates an unforgettable work. Recorded partly during a successful concert at Bergen's Nattjazz festival in 2016, and partly at Broen studio in Bergen - where it was also mixed - in 2020, the album places great importance on sonic details. Legendary producer Jorgen Tr'en achieves an effect equivalent to a grand epic opus. The sophisticated music nods to various styles and references but manages to remain singular and contemporary.
