The Irish composer John Field (1872-1837) is still celebrated today as the father of the nocturne, for having created a genre that inspired Chopin and generations of Romantic piano composers. Field’s talents for the piano were recognized very early, from the age of nine, and nurtured by Muzio Clementi, the Italian-born composer and publisher based in London, who took him on as a pupil. Thus, although Field’s first three sonatas date from 1801, when he was still a teenager, they are the result of a decade of dedication to the art and musical technique.
