Three Bells

Description

Three Bells, the new album by Ty Segall, is an obsessive quest for expression. With a large part of the album played by Ty in conversation with himself, a decision that further elevates the concept of the record, he responds to the countercurrent that unconsciously pulls him into the depths. Across the fifteen songs overflowing with perspectives, constantly shifting in form, Ty has pushed composition to its limits. Each song traverses, in its own way, a repetitive thematic material, creating an atmosphere of claustrophobia/paranoia, moving from bold ideas to ego deaths, one step forward two steps back. On Three Bells, Ty and Denée Segall collaborated on five of the songs. Some songs required a type of playing that Ty could not achieve alone. Emmett Kelly's bass parts not only met this need but also inspired the way the songs were played. The remaining members of the Freedom Band were called upon to contribute. Co-producer Cooper Crain, who contributed to Harmonizer and Hello, Hi, recorded and mixed most of the album. Three Bells takes Ty Segall's journeys much further and deeper than they have been before – a masterpiece of personal expression, conveyed through words, music, and production, addressing discomfort parabolically with compassion in over an hour of intoxicating and unstoppable music.
