From time to time, we discover a band that exudes both a sense of novelty and authenticity, leaving you speechless. TV Star is one of those bands. In recent years, this quintet from Seattle-Tacoma (Washington) has quietly gained momentum, EP after EP, concert after concert, culminating in the release of Music For Heads, their long-awaited debut album, which confirms their status as an exceptional band. A subtle blend of crystalline psychedelia and airy depth garage rock, their tracks radiate striking originality. At a time when music is sinking into algorithmic uniformity, TV Star sounds resolutely human. Throughout the ten tracks of the album, the band refines their musical signature, mixing timeless pop sounds, psychedelic accents reminiscent of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, punk rhythms, and a warm, enveloping vocal style. With Music For Heads, they do not merely draw from the past; they infuse a new dynamic into music. Formed in 2020 around a shared passion for 90s psychedelia, classic shoegaze, and emerging alt-country bands, their origins trace back to the discovery of an Electriclarryland cassette by Butthole Surfers (1996) that had fallen off the wall, on which someone had noted the track "TV Star." What followed was less the formation of a band than the creation of a small ecosystem. Ashlyn Nagel (vocals, keyboards), Bryan Coats (guitar), Che Hise-Gattone (guitar), Mark Palm (bass), and Tucker Devault (drums) brought their ideas, unique traits, and musical backgrounds, until the songs ultimately reflected each of their personalities. Recorded in a constellation of intimate locations in the Pacific Northwest – The Unknown in Anacortes, as well as a few discreet studios in Seattle – their debut album, Music For Heads, sits at the crossroads of crystalline guitar music, vaporous psychedelic pop, and intimate indie rock, without confining itself to a single genre.
