Tugan Sokhiev and his Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse take on Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8, an epic of iron and ice. The Eighth, the second in the trilogy of war symphonies written by Shostakovich between 1941 and 1945, was warmly received at its premiere in 1943 but soon put on the pillory by the authorities. The evocative power of this dark fresco has nevertheless restored it to its rightful place: among the very greatest of the 20th century. Warner Classics is launching a new collaboration with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse. For this ensemble, internationally renowned in the French repertoire, the encounter with Tugan Sokhiev opened up other horizons, among which Shostakovich’s symphonies constitute one of the first challenges. Among Shostakovich’s fifteen symphonies, Symphony No. 8 can be heard as an intimate and wrenching confession, oscillating between pathos and violence. Monumental, close to despair, this symphony is a true opera for the orchestra, where Shostakovich displays a virtuosity of timbres, with unprecedented dramatic power.
