These Russian composers witnessed significant turning points in the history of Russia. Arensky passed away in 1906, the year Shostakovich was born; their works trace the trajectory of the political and artistic history of Russia and the Soviet Union during that time. Arensky's passionate Piano Trio No. 1 was composed in 1894, at the height of Russian Romanticism. Inspired by youthful love, Shostakovich, only 17 years old, composed his Piano Trio No. 1 'Poème' in 1923 in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg), expressing strong personal emotions through a musical language influenced by films. Just 20 years later, in 1944, Shostakovich composed his Piano Trio No. 2. By using Jewish music for the first time, he gave voice to the greatest tragedies of the era while composing music that reveals the irrepressible spark of life.
