They needed a break. After the release of 12 Memories and the numerous performances that followed, Fran Healy, the voice of Travis, says it was time to put Travis on pause. The four friends from Glasgow, of whom Chris Martin, always candid, says they "invented Coldplay," decided to take some time to recharge, simply. In a way, this fifth album is one of rebirth, to which Brian Eno (producer of the next Coldplay, coincidentally...), Nigel Godrich, and Mike Hedges contributed wholeheartedly. Adopting a soft, vaporous pop style based on often dry guitars with enveloping textures and undulating rhythms, Travis does not return transformed with this Boy With No Name, but certainly does better than just treading in their own footsteps. A few listens to Selfish Jean, Battleships, Out In Space, or Colder are enough to affirm that the band has matured and gained serenity. This is how they emerge stronger from their voluntary retreat.
