When absurdity meets glory, it’s the story of the Trashmen, a young quartet from Minnesota made up of drummer and singer Steve Wahrer, guitarists Tony Andreason and Dan Winslow, and bassist Bob Reed. One fine evening, these local stars adapt two songs (“Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” and “Bird Is the Word”) from the doo-wop group The Rivingtons, merging them into one, “Surfin’ Bird.” Collective euphoria. A local DJ convinces them to record this cult work of 2 minutes and 22 seconds, which goes in all directions and means nothing, between hysterical onomatopoeias and ruffled guitars. In 1964, the album Surfin’ Bird is also released, filled with covers and a few original compositions. Despite their breakup in 1967, the swagger and garage sound of the Trashmen will inspire many, from the Iguanas to the Cramps to the Ramones.
