Telling the beginnings of house music without mentioning Tony Humphries, DJ, remixer, and radio host, would be incomplete, artificial, and above all, rather boring. Born in Brooklyn in 1957, Humphries' musical journey is inseparable from the history of New York dance music and the evolution of uptempo soul into house: from dancer at the famous Loft parties of David Mancuso to mobile DJ, then answering the call of Shep Pettibone to become his right-hand man at the brand new radio station Kiss FM, followed by countless remix offers and a legendary residency at Club Zanzibar in Newark. But it is primarily his work as a radio host for that same station, for most of the 1980s until 1994, that earned him exceptional notoriety. Breaking records week after week, propelling New Jersey artists like Adeva and Jomanda, as well as countless emerging producers from the region, onto the music scene, while broadcasting the latest European hits, tracks from Chicago, dance classics, and everything coming straight out of the New York music factory, which seemed to never stop.
