Description

THE LEGEND OF AFROBEAT MEETS BRAZILIAN MUSIC.. “Without Tony Allen, there would be no afrobeat” Fela 'Anikulapo' Kuti “TONY ALLEN, the best of both worlds” Les InRocks “Tony Allen really made me dance” Blur “Perhaps the greatest drummer of all time” Brian Eno In May 2012, following their concert at Circo Voador in Rio, Tony Allen, the Abayomy Afrobeat Orquestra and rapper-singer BNegao got together in the studio for a live recording session on the famous track Meus Filhos by Jorge Ben Jor, one of the great classics of Brazilian music, released in 1976 on his album Africa Brazil. This musical encounter between the master of afrobeat drums and the artists of the new Brazilian scene, the Abayomy Orchestra from Rio and the artist BNegao, celebrates on this track Meus Filhos the influences of African culture on the music and arts of Brazil. Tony ALLEN Tony Allen has long been recognized as the most original drummer on the planet, and one of the most influential musicians on the black continent. His playing is influenced by highlife, soul-funk, jazz, and traditional Nigerian rhythms. In the company of Fela Kuti and the Africa 70's group with whom he played for fifteen years, Allen created afrobeat, this music with hypnotic rhythms, based on few chords played in loops by guitars and keyboards, enhanced by powerful and melodic brass riffs, all tied to the social, political and urban context of its time. This style became a dominant force in Africa and a reference worldwide. BNEGÃO Seen at the closing ceremony of the London Olympic Games in the company of Seu Jorge, BNegão honed his craft for eight years with Planet Hemp, an emblematic nineties band advocating the legalization of maconha against a backdrop of rap-metal fusion. Founded by Skunk and Marcelo D2, the group also saw Black Alien, another multi-talented rapper, pass through its ranks. Even Seu Jorge did a stint there after leaving Farofa Carioca. “Planet gave me the experience of large audiences. I was a lyricist and I also learned a lot about production by watching a crack like Mário Caldato Jr. work. In fact, the sound he produced for the Beastie Boys is a reference for my work and that of the Seletores,” he concludes about this collaboration. BNegão established himself as an original figure on the Brazilian rap scene, outside the ghetto and open to various experiments. As a result, he was in high demand and found himself taking part in an incalculable number of projects: from Curumin to Mago Bo. Including Baiana System or CéU, to name only the artists mentioned here.
