Description

AGON is the first feature film by Giulio Bertelli. AGON is the first feature film by Giulio Bertelli. The film follows three female athletes — a judoka, a fencer, and a rifle shooter — as they prepare and then compete at the LUDOJ 2024, a fictional Olympic Games. Inspired by historical figures Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and Nadezhda Durova, these women are depicted in the political, social, technological, and physical contexts that dominate high-level competition. The events of the LUDOJ take place not in stadiums, but on film sets, without an audience. These spartan spaces, populated only by athletes, officials, and a film crew, capture every audio-visual layer with extreme precision: every fall on the tatami, every clink of the sword, every gunshot. The music by Tom Wheatley was born as a conceptual mirror of this setup. Three musicians, each connected to a sport through the language of their instrument: percussion for judo, cello for fencing, saxophone for shooting. In addition, there are claustrophobic analog electronics and bagpipes, to evoke what lies beyond competition: war. Subjected to extreme live processing in the studio, these sounds move into a gray area between composition, sound design, and foley — reflecting the parallel that Wheatley draws between the athlete's gesture and that of the musician, both bearers of tools laden with history and technique.
